Colored Diamonds
Diamonds are represented in a variety of colors. The color of a diamond can vary from almost colorless to very light yellow or brown. The most costly are colorless diamonds (due to their unsurpassable ability to absorb all rays of light equally) and fancy colored diamonds (owing to their curiosity and rareness).
Natural Fancy Colored Diamonds are colored because they contain certain elements like, boron nitrogen, etc. These elements were created in diamonds naturally during their formation in earth.
Color has a great impact on the beauty and value of a gemstone. There exist four main factors of a gemstone's color: hue, tone, saturation, and distribution.
Hue is the color itself that can be seen in the spectrum. It may be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo or violet. The value of a diamond depends on the pureness of the hue. As diamonds are created of a variety of natural elements, they have one main color and one or more additional colors.
Tone determines how light or dark a stone is. Tone depends on the amount of brown, black, gray or white in a diamond.
Saturation is the intensity of a color`s brightness. A gemstone is considered very costly if it saturates much color.
Distribution depends on how evenly the color is distributed across the body of the diamond.
There are various types of colored diamonds in different regions of the earth. Every colored diamond should be treated individually and manufactured by highly skilled jewelers who combine their technical knowledge with a perfect sense of beauty and color. Each colored diamond is different not only because of its natural color but also because of the way it is shaped and polished.
The best shapes which reveal the hue depth of most fancy color diamonds are cushion or radiant shapes forms. The most qualified jewelers shorten the optical light path through the diamond, creating the shining light that is reflected from them. The factors which can intensify the color are deeper pavilions and different facets.
